As a small business nestled in the heart of Charleston, we love sharing the magic of our historic city with visitors, especially during the vibrant spring and summer months. From the colorful streets to the historic landscaped gardens, Charleston comes alive in the warmer seasons, offering plenty of picturesque spots to explore. Here’s our insider guide to the must-visit places in Charleston.
Rainbow Row

One of Charleston’s most iconic landmarks, Rainbow Row, is a top destination when visiting the Holy City. This bright stretch of historic homes along East Bay Street is famous for its pastel-colored exteriors, each with its own unique story. The vibrant hues of these Georgian-style homes create an unforgettable photo opportunity and capture the city’s colorful character.
As you wander down East Bay Street and past Rainbow Row, take the time to enjoy the views of the Lowcountry and catch a glimpse of Pickney Castle and Fort Sumter from The Battery, a historic walkway which wraps all the way around the tip of the peninsula.
King Street

Charleston is known for its history, but it’s also a shopper’s paradise. King Street is the perfect place to wander- offering a blend of high-end boutiques, antique shops, local galleries, gift stores, and exceptional restaurants. If you’re looking for unique home decor, Southern-inspired fashion, or a souvenir to take home, King Street has something for everyone.
Stop into our Old Whaling Co. retail store at 409 King Street to explore Charleston-made self-care items that will serve as a beautiful reminder of your visit. See our curated collection of handmade and locally made accessories inspired by the sea! Make sure to grab a bite at one of the local restaurants or cafes lining the street. Southern comfort food is always on the menu.
The Charleston City Market

No visit to Charleston is complete without a stop at the Charleston City Market, where Old Whaling Co. began almost thirteen years ago. This stretch of four buildings is known as a historic and bustling hub that has been a center for local vendors since 1807. This area is where you can experience the heart of Charleston’s culture. The market features a variety of vendors selling local crafts, handmade jewelry, sweetgrass baskets, and unique souvenirs that reflect the city’s rich heritage. We know the value of supporting local artisans, and the City Market is an excellent place to discover one-of-a-kind items while learning about Charleston’s craftsmanship.
The City Market is open daily, but it’s especially lively on Friday and Saturday nights during the “night market” from 6:30pm to 10:30pm when local performers and new street vendors add to the lively atmosphere. Charleston is full of history and culture, and there’s no better place to experience it than here in the heart of the city.
Folly Beach

A large attraction to Charleston comes from our wonderful beaches. Just a short drive from downtown, Folly Beach offers sun, sand, and surf in a laid-back environment. For those who prefer a less crowded beach experience, we recommend exploring the less-developed parts of Folly toward the North and South ends of the island where the natural beauty of the coastline remains untouched. Take a surfing lesson or hunt for shark teeth at low tide. Check out the new Folly Beach pier and gift shop, where you can purchase day fishing passes and find Old Whaling Co. products, too!
